    Stakeholders’ views towards students’ use of mobile phones in secondary schools in Tanzania: a case of Tabora municipality

    This study determined the education stakeholders’ views towards students’ use of mobile phones in secondary schools in Tabora Municipality, Tanzania. The study rested on the following objectives: To determine education stakeholders’ views towards students’ use of mobile phones in secondary schools; To establish the reasons which make teachers prohibit students from having and using mobile phones in secondary schools and to establish the reasons which force students going to school with mobile phones despite being prohibited by teachers. The study was carried out in Tabora Municipality. Participants of the study were selected through purposive and simple random sampling procedures. A total of 142 participants were involved in the study, out of whom were 96 secondary school students, 4 academic teachers, 4 discipline teachers, 16 class teachers, 20 parents, 1 Regional Education Officer and 1 District Education Officer. The study used qualitative and quantitative approaches whereby a case study design was used. Data were collected through questionnaire, interviews, and documentary search and were analyzed by using content analysis and SPSS version 16 to compute percentages. Findings revealed differing views from stakeholders towards students’ use of mobile phones in secondary schools. Most students preferred to possess and use mobile phones in schools while most of teachers and all education officers did not support the view. Majority of parents supported the use of mobile phones in schools. Teachers prohibited mobile phones in schools so as to maintain academic performance, control students’ behavior, prevent threatening information t o students and maintain school rules and regulations which prohibited mobile phones in schools. Students were going to school with their mobile phones just for prestige and for making contacts to various people. The study concluded that, education stakeholders who support mobile phones in schools were not aware of the way mobile phones impact students’ academic performance and behavior. It was also concluded that teachers had sufficient grounds to prohibit mobile phones in schools. It was further concluded that there was very little significant reason for students going to school with mobile phones. It is recommended that the government through the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training has to cooperate with various stakeholders such as parents, teachers, education officers and religious leaders to educate students the importance of not going school with mobile phones.
