Evaluation of resource mobilization strategies of non- governmental organizations in Kinondoni district, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Uhadi, Francis Sebastian
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the resource mobilization strategies of NGOs in Kinondoni Municipality in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The research design had study population of 280 NGOs. A sample of 50 organizations which is equal to 17.9 percent of the total population was drawn. Primary data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires, and semi- structured interviews. Quantitative data were coded and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software. Data have been presented in various forms particularly by using tables, graphs and charts. Qualitative data were analyzed using NVivo software and presented by using descriptions and case studies. The study has found out that NGOs differ greatly in their resource mobilization strategies according to their nature and capacity. Findings further indicated that, international donors are the main source of income for NGOs. The study has further established that there are several challenges associated with funding which include among others changing donor priorities, increased competition between NGOs for funds from same donors, complex funding criteria applied to organizations, donor conditionality and bureaucratic donor policies. The study recommends that NGOs in Kinondoni need to address their internal capacity challenges and diversify their resource mobilization strategies so that they are able to avoid over-reliance and overdependence on international donor funds and ensure their own suitability and that of their operations.
