A mathematical model for assessing the impact of antiretroviral (ARVS) therapy to pregnant women infected with HIV/AIDS in Zanzibar.
(Unversity of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Ufuzo, Latifa Salmin
This is a study of a deterministic model for HIV epidemic with six groups of womenincluding those infected and pregnant. The transmission of the disease is considered to be only through heterosexual contact and not vertically from an infected mother to her unborn child. The equilibrium points of the non-linear model system are found and their stability, if the reproduction number R0 < 1, the disease-free equilibrium is always locally asymptotically stable and in such a case the endemic equilibrium does not exist. If R0 > 1, a unique endemic equilibrium exists which is locally asymptotically stable and becomes globally asymptotically stable under certain conditions showing that the disease becomes endemic? We carried out a sensitivity analysis on the key parameters which drive the disease dynamics in order to determine their relative importance to disease transmission. The numerical simulations of the pregnant women with treatment model are carried out in order to determine whether the disease will persist when their partial reproductive numbers exceed unity. Finally graphical representations of the numerical simulations using Mat Lab codes are presented to illustrate and complement the analytical results.
