Economic valuation of wildlife resources conservation: a case study of west Kilimanjaro range lands
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Tumaini, Jeremiah Wilhelm
This dissertation examines the economic value of wildlife resources in west Kilimanjaro range lands using the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). Specifically, it analyses the nature of the resources use, the value that people place on the resources and the motives behind the unsustainable use of the resources. It does so using some primary data which were collected in a survey which was conducted involving 6 villages out of the 9 villages which make up the Eduimet Wildlife Management Area (WMA) within west Kilimanjaro range lands. Out of the total 2113 households, 310 households were successfully interviewed and the information obtained was used for analysis. The key findings of this dissertation show that people are aware of the benefits from good conservation and the loss due to the poor conservation of the resources. The majorities were further willing to conserve the resources and the mean Willingness to Pay for the conservation of the resources was 6,964 TSH per month for the double bounded questions and 9,871 TSH per month for the open ended question. This high WTP can be attributed to the good payment vehicle (Offering man power / labour days for conservation) which was suitable under the circumstances of the surveyed community. However, there are still some drawbacks in the conservation of the wildlife resources which need a policy attention. These among others include unsustainable use of the resources intensified by poor monitoring of the licensed hunters motivated by the lucrative bush meat business and other motives.
