Item The cultural sequence on Bussi Island, lake Victoria, Uganda(University of Dar es Salaam, 2008) Tibesasa, RuthThis dissertation about excavations conducted at Nkuba site in Bussi Island on Lake Victoria so as to establish early farming cultural sequence is then used to shed light on the period prior to Early Iron Working in this area and Lake Victoria basin respectively. The main objective of the study was to establish a complete sequence of early farming cultural materials between Late Stone Age and Early Iron Working traditions at Nkuba site. The emphasis was put on Neolithic traditions as evidence of early farming since early farming has always been attributed to Early Iron Working which has created controversy amongst the scholars. Based on excavation results and data analysis this study has managed to establish one Neolithic tradition as far as sequence prior to Early Iron Working is concemed. This confirms that just like elsewhere in northern Tanzania and Kenya this area possesses Neolithic tradition as well. Late Stone Age, Neolithic Early Iron Working, Entebbe and Roulette traditions were recovered at Nkuba site which gives evidence of the continuity of successful population in this area. This disproves the belief that the area was only occupied by hunting and fishing communities until they were replaced by iron-using communities.
