Factors influencing piracy of film works in Tanzania: a case of Dar es Salaam region
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2018) Tawani, Hamad Rashid
This study investigated factors influencing piracy of film works in Tanzania. The objectives of the study were to assess the relationship between film piracy and its determinants; investigating various forms of film piracy; assessing the film stakeholders’ awareness on the existence of copyright law; assessing efforts taken by COSOTA and TAFF in fighting film piracy in Tanzania; and recommending the strategies for eliminating film piracy. The study employed a qualitative and quantitative approach in studying targeted population. The study involved 45 respondents drawn among various film stakeholders. Convenience, purposive, and snowball sampling were adopted to obtain the sample. The data was collected using interview, questionnaire and participant observation. Data was analysed by use of SPSS software and presented in the form of tables and figures. The study found that burning of CDs and DVDs; copying via internet, cellular phones, flash disks; and illegal sales were the most common forms of piracy in Tanzania. Also, the study reveals that there is lack of awareness on the existence of copyright law among film stakeholders. Moreover, the study found that efforts taken by COSOTA and TAFF to combat film piracy were not sufficient enough. Finally, the study recommends the government organs to strongly enforce the intellectual property right law to the society through media like radio, television, workshop and seminars, increase awareness of the law to the public, building strong coordination between film artists and TAFF, COSOTA and TAFF should increase more efforts in fighting against piracy, the government must provide enough funds to COSOTA as well as supporting the development of film industry in Tanzania.
