Development of efficient method for seamless handover in Femtocells for LTE systems in fast varying channels.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2018) Tarimo, Catherine Protas
The studies undertaken in recent years show that more than 70% of user’s traffic is generated from indoors and this ratio is still increasing. In service providers there is a challenge of achieving a higher data rate and better coverage. Femtocell access point as the evolving wireless technology becomes one of major solutions to overcome the drawbacks. However, placement of femtocells with small coverage ranges in wireless communication will lead to frequent handover initiations. Also high speed users stay in femtocell for a short time that leads to frequent handover. In this study, an efficient method for seamless handover in femtocells for LTE system in fast varying channels was developed. Due to proximity challenge of femtocells, frequent time and frequency changes of the channel, the algorithm used received signal strength, UE speed, and direction to control the handling over. The decision algorithm chooses the right target femtocell for handing over in a way that the frequent handover triggers are reduced during a call connection. The algorithm extends the time interval between handovers by choosing the farthest cell, it uses both Windowing for signal power averaging and Handover Delay Timer (HDT), avoiding short changes and making handover decision. Simulation results showed that, throughput improved by 12.2% and 33% reduction in total handover count of the proposed system compared to (Rajabizadeh 2015). It was also observed that the time to trigger handover increased from 6.6 seconds to 11.1 seconds fo r(Rajabizadeh 2015)and proposed algorithm respectively.
