Factors affecting employee commitment in public service organizations a case of MDAs and LGA
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Tarimo, Anthony Gibson
Employee commitment is one of the most important element that help organizations to achieve their goals. This study investigated the factors which affect employee commitment in the Public Service Organizations. A survey was carried out among 143 public servants. Simple random and convenient sampling technique was applied to the select respondents. In this study a five point Likert-type scale was used as a questionnaire type. Based on this scale, three categories of factors affecting employee commitment (biographical, internal and external organizational factors) were evaluated. Each factor was revealed to have statements of commitment. The findings of the study indicated that biographical, internal and external organizational factors generally affect employees’ commitment. The study further found out that education level, career development and status of marriage are biographical determinant factors of employee commitment. It was also noted that organization factors like salaries and incentives; appreciation and value of employees by management; supervisions and leadership style and challenging work affect employee commitment. It was further found out those external organizational factors such as salaries, fringe benefits and working environment have important role in employee commitment. From the findings of the study, it was recommended that there should be appropriate training programmes, reviewing of salaries and fringe benefits, improvement in working environment, involvement of staff in setting organizational goals, recognition of employees’ achievement and optimal and effective leadership style and supervision.
