The influence of road impediments on the late delivery of transported goods: the case of Tanzania

The study assesses the influence of road impediments on the late delivery of goods, specifically in Tanzania. It examines the extent which weighbridges, customs checkpoints, police checkpoints and additional police stops influence late delivery of goods transported from one place to the destination both local and transit cargo. Using questionnaire data were collected from 180 respondents, trucks and companies which were registered for transportation were focused on. For transit routes only trucks registered by the Customs department were involved. Data collected were subjected to analysis using Statistical Package for social Sciences Software (SPSS). The study revealed that, there is a strong relationship between the weighbridges, customs checkpoint, police checkpoints and additional police stops and late delivery of transported goods. From the findings it is recommended that the Government should asses the number of weighbridges, customs checkpoints and police stops and their benefits to the economy. Better way of controlling weight, speed and security during transportation should be established by centralizing the operation and coordination of all actors. Moreover should encourage automation of operation and review the criteria of weighbridges establishment and their operation.
