A study of the development of small and medium enterprises in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Sudi, Matayo
This study investigated the development of small and medium enterprises in Kigoma District. The specific objectives were to examine performance in terms of production trends, problems faced, strategies used by SMEs to market their products and to support their development as well as the available opportunities. The enterprises which were studied were Tan Soap, Mery soap, Kujile soap, Majuto Mohamed Shabani, Pascal Kagoma, Adiel oil, Asumpta Francis and Aziz oil. To achieve this objective, I used interviews, questionnaires and documentary review as data collection techniques. This study found that small and medium enterprises in Kigoma District were faced with a number of problems including inadequate finance, poor infrastructure, inadequate power supply and inadequate technology. Others were lack of machinery maintenance skills and high taxes. Consequently, the studied small and medium enterprises had not yet made a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of Kigoma District. Therefore, this study recommends that the government in collaboration with other development stakeholders and the local people should improve the infrastructure, provide adequate loans to local entrepreneurs, supply electricity and modernize the SME sector in Kigoma District. This study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter gives the background to the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, questions which guided this study and the significance of this study. The second chapter presents the review of literature which informed this study, and chapter three shows the methodology that was used to collect the data. Chapter four presents and discusses the findings, while chapter five gives a summary, conclusion and recommendations.
