Performance evaluation of 3g umts network for delivery of multimedia services for tansse-l system
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Stephen, Josephine
TanSSe-L system was developed to provide online learning content for secondary schools. The aim was to reach as many schools as possible in both urban and rural areas all over the country. The major problem is the means to provide connectivity especially in rural areas where the ICT infrastructure is still inadequate. Because of this, a choice of access network to the local school servers must be of a network that can easily be deployed all over the country at the same time provide reliable access for the users. This dissertation’s main focus was to determine the performance of 3G UMTS network for delivery of multimedia services, specifically to determine application services and performance requirements appropriate for TanSSe-L system. A UMTS network as a backbone for connectivity between the main servers of TanSSe-L system and the local servers, and a typical school LAN network model was developed. The key to analyse performance was done by simulation and analysing the results based on the defined key performance indicators and results were compared to 3GPP standards for 3G networks. The overall performance of the modelled network showed that the modelled UMTS infrastructure can support TanSSe-L services. Obtained results include a maximum of 42 percent utilization of a dedicated channel, maximum end-to-end delay of 4.6 ms with variations of 3.5 ms in the UMTS cell. These findings are within the requirements for QoS set for 3G networks. Other means of providing access network for TanSSe-L system can be using NICTBB infrastructure.
