Challenges facing Tanzania small and medium enterprises in packaging food products for international markets
(University of Dar Es Salaam, 2013) Sinje, Catherine
The overall objective of this study was to determine challenges facing Tanzanian SMEs in packaging of food products for major international markets. The study employed purposive sampling design and collected data using a questionnaire to a sample of 100 Small and Medium exporters in Ilala, Temeke and Kinondoni districts of Dar es Salaam region. Analysis of the data was done using SPSS database. Findings revealed that majority of respondents were moderately aware of some of the most recognized international certification standards including Rain Forest Alliance, International Standards Organisation (ISO), International Food Standard Certificate (IFS) and others. Furthermore package materials, package colour and package label were revealed the most important requirements for packaged products to international markets. Challenges of packaging included lack of local companies to design high quality packages, inadequate trainings and presence of high costs. The conclusion made was that the government of Tanzania through its business support agencies like SIDO, TCCIA, Tan Trade as well as TBS should continue with their efforts to assist local and exporting firms in coming out with quality packages that would make Tanzania gain popularity as a country that has production of high quality products. It was also recommended for the Government of Tanzania to focus on creating an efficient environment capable of improving the export performance of Tanzania firms. Rapid development of modern and world class infrastructure will significantly contribute to the competitiveness of these firms.
