Problems and prospects of the East African Common Market: a study
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1977) Simwela, Eli P. A
Most East Africans, particularly in Tanzania and Uganda feel that the East African Comrnon Market is not really common for all the partner states. They feel that (and perhaps they correctly do so) ever since the East African Common Market was established almost a decade ago, Kenya (among the partner states) has continued to benefit from the Common Market more than her fair share and this is inspite of the corrective measures which were included in the Treaty for East African Cooperation. This study discusses the problems and prospects of the East African Common Market since it was established in 1967. The study is divided into three parts; (1) Introduction, (2) Problems of the East African Common Market and (3) Prospects of the East African Common Market. The introduction to this study includes three sections. The first section discusses the concepts and definitions of a common market. The second section traces the historical development of the East African Common Market since colonial days to date. The final section discusses the structure and objectives of the East African Common Market. Chapter 1 is divided into two parts. The first part provides an analysis of inter state trade covering the period between 1967 to 1975. The second part discusses the problems of the East African Common Market. The problems which have been considered in this study are: (1) Institutional problems, ( 2 ) Problems of dependency and (3) Problems of ideological differences among the partner states. Chapter 2 discusses the prospects of the East African Common Market.
