The effectiveness of the adoption of competence based education for teaching and learning mathematics in secondary schools in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2008) Shemwelekwa, Rogers Jacob
This study sought to investigate the effectiveness of the adoption of competence-based education (CBE) for T/L of mathematics in secondary schools. The study used both the qualitative and quantitative approach findings reveal that teachers have the basic idea of CBE, however the understanding of CBE has been removed by teachers to the extent of affecting its classroom implementation. The challenges in the implementation of the mathematics’ curriculum are ion terms of scarcity of schools for competence-based mathematics curriculum, teachers are still using the tradition teaching methods, which do not maximize the teaching of competence by the students in selected topics. The form of assessment used by the teachers were not performance-based assessment, which maximize the assessment of competence based mathematics curriculum. The study recommends that. Seminars and workshops to be conducted to teachers to expose them to CBE in Mathematics. The ministry of education, The Tanzania Institute of education, The National Examination Council of Tanzania and school managers should organize in service training time to time train teachers on the competence-based education. The heads of school, academic masters and head of departments school should do the internal monitoring of the curriculum implementation at school level
