Optimizing use of library special collection materials through digitization: A case study of East Africana, Dr. Wilbert K. Chagula Library.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Shemakame, Kiuye Mbwana
This research examined the optimum use of special collection materials through digitization in the Dr. WKC Library as a case study. Libraries in Tanzania encounter different challenges concerning digitization of materials in different special collections. Such challenges are hindering digitization projects in most East African countries, especially Tanzania. The objective of this research was to assess the East Africana Collection digitization process and how it optimizes use of library special collection materials, UDSM, Dr. WKC Library. The study sought to identify challenges and provided suggestions to overcome them so as to ensure their safety and improve current and future users’ access. Primary data for the research were collected from UDSM, Dr. WKC Library users, staff and the Digitization Management Team. Also special collection materials formed part of primary data for this study. Research methods included interviews, questionnaires and participant observation. Various documentary sources were used to gather secondary data. The overall conclusion of the study is that digitization of the library is very important. However it is faced by a number of challenges including funding, dependence on external aid, limited user education, lack of standard or guidelines and low technical knowledge. Some of the strategies and recommendations to deal with such challenges include fundraising programs, presence of an implementable ICT policy, frequent IT training and others.
