    Female participation in the informal sector: a case of Tanzania

    This study analyzes the determinants of female participation in Tanzanian informal sector using the 2006 Integrated Labour Force Survey (LFS) data which provides a deeper understanding of how variables such as age, age square, asset, number of children, education, family headship, household size, marital status and location determine female participation in the Tanzanian informal sector. It does so by estimating a multinomial logit model. The results show that primary and tertiary education increase the chances of female participation in the different categories of the labour market while secondary education has no influence in determining female participation in the informal sector. Age is positively significant in determining female participation in all categories of the labour market with the exception of the unpaid worker category where it shows a negative influence. Marriage impacts negatively on female labour force participation except in the public sector where it does not have any significant impact. Moreover, urban based females are more likely to participate in the labour market than their rural based counterparts. Similarly, female who are households’ heads are more likely to participate in the labour market than those who are not. The policy implication emerging from this study entails increased efforts towards addressing the problem of women’s access to the labour market through access to education which is one of the important factors for improving their human capital. Also, the government needs to improve living standards in rural areas and create more employment opportunities particularly for women.
