    An assessment of the contribution of liquefied petroleum gas adoption in reducing biomass fuel consumption in Tanzania; a case of kibamba Ward- Dar es Salaam

    In Tanzania liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel gained its popularity in 2000s with the assumption of replacing wood fuels. Woody fuels are scientifically proven to contribute to climate change through forest degradation and air pollution. Wood fuels are also associated with many socio-economic problems. The supply and use of LPG in Tanzania is more dominant in urban areas than in rural areas. The adoption and use was expected to replace the use of wood fuel in the country. This study aimed at assessing the contribution of liquefied petroleum Gas in reducing woody fuel use of cooking among households in Kibamba ward by examining the types of fuels used at households level, establishing factors influencing the use of particular cooking fuels, and assess people’s perception on the use of LPG as well as establishing the benefits of LPG over wood fuel in kibamba ward in Ubungo District- Tanzania. The study was informed by two theories, Diffusion of innovation theory and Energy ladder’s theory. Sample sizes of 361 respondents were used to collect data. The collected data were analysed statistically by using SPSS statistic version 19 software and content analysis methods. The findings of the study revealed that majority of households (83.6%) uses more than one type of cooking fuels, (charcoal, firewood, LPG etc.) and that charcoal is the leading cooking fuel ( 93.2%) followed by LPG (65.2%). Through the analysis it was observed that income disparities is the major determinant factor that influence the choice and use of a particular type of cooking fuel in the ward. Majority of respondents (91.7%) who their income fall between Tsh 2,600/= and 10.000/= perceive LPG as efficient and effective but expensive fuel to use. The benefits of LPG in the study area were reduced to forest saving and time saving especially during cooking process. The government should review its LPG fuel taxes and other charges as a strategy to enable the lower income earners to afford the use of the fuel. Recommended areas for further study were the roles of regulatory authorities like EWURA on controlling LPG fuel price as on other petroleum products to promote of the LPG fuel for environmental and socio-economic benefits.
