    Assessment of asset management performance of national water supply projects in Tanzania: a case study of Chalinze, Handeni trunk main and Makonde water supply projects.

    Infrastructure in most National Water Projects in Tanzania are characterized by unattended deterioration associated with frequent breakdowns. This dissertation is an attempt to establish whether this situation is caused by inadequate asset management practices. The case study approach was selected to collect data through in-depth interviews with Agencies managing the water supply network projects.Chalinze Water Supply (CWSP), Handeni Trunk Main Water Supply Project (HTMWSP) and Makonde Water Supply Project (MWSP) were studied in this research. The results of the study indicate that, CWSP is adequately implementing only forty percent of the basic activities of asset management while sixty percent of the activities are not adequately performed. For the case of HTMWSP, thirty percent of basic asset management activities are well performed while the rest seventy percent of activities are poorly implemented. Twenty five percent of basic asset management activities in MWSP are properly executed while seventy five percent of activities are poorly implemented.It is concluded that, asset management performance in each of the three cases studied falls short of even the basic practices. The main reason being lack of knowledge and skills. It is therefore recommended that agencies responsible for managing these projects should, acquire necessary knowledge and skills in asset management; start practicing basic asset management; and continuously upgrade towards the advanced asset management practices.
