(University of Dar es Salaam, 2008) Seni, Abdallah Jacob
This study investigated the types and extent of community support to community secondary schools (CSSs) in Shinyanga. The aim was to identify the extent of support and link it to teachers' motivation, and quality of education provided in the CSSs. The study, which was conducted in all eight districts of Shinyanga namely; Shinyanga Urban (U), Shinyanga rural (R), Maswa, Bariadi, Meatu, Kishapu, Kahama, and Bukombe, was composed of 304 respondents. The respondents were Heads of Schools (HOSs), teachers, students, Ward Executive Officer (WEOs), Village Executive Officers (VEOs), Community Members) and Non-governmental Organizations (NGO) Coordinators. The study used qualitative and quantitative paradigms. The tools used for data collection were interview guides, questionnaires, checklists, observation schedules, and documentary reviews. Photographs were used to record vivid situation. Findings revealed that community support to CSSs was low. In classroom constructions the community support registered a moderate support; there was low support on laboratories, libraries, teachers' houses, water, electricity, first aid kits, play grounds, hostels administration blocks, and toilets for students and teachers. The, findings revealed shortage of teachers in the CSSs and the few available are demoralized. All of which lowers the education quality in the CSSs. is recommended that "a common understanding" as far as minimum Its genera or a school to function as "a secondary school" be reached among resources for community members.
