Sensitivity to gender bias in conversational repair among students of the University of Dar es Salaam.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2003) Selestino, Adronis
The study seeks to investigate the sensitivity to gender bias in the repair mechanism in conversation among students of the University of Dar es Salaam. The study has been motivated by the situation that in recent years there has been various efforts seeking to educate the general public on the need to be gender sensitive on the part of every member of the University of Dar es Salaam community. The study is organised in five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction to the study. The second chapter reviews the related literature and gives detailed theoretical framework. The third chapter describes the research methodology and presents the data. Data from each excerpt are presented in two main categories. Category one presents real repairs and category two presents pseudo repairs. The fourth chapter reveals the findings of the research. The findings indicated that the students were not gender sensitive. This means that students frequently used language that discriminates against women, the language that paints women as inferior members of the society. The last chapter, that is, chapter five, summarises the findings, makes a conclusion and further gives recommendations and suggestions for further research.
