    The treaty for African Economic Community: problems and prospects

    This dissertation examines various legal and institutional frameworks of selected African regional groupings and their genesis, with a view to appraising the feasibility of the African Economic Community as envisaged by the Treaty of African Economic Community. In pursuing this study, reference is made to the European Economic Community and some experiences are drawn there from. It is observed that much as economic integration is important to the growth and development of Third World countries, it is not a panacea to their economic problems. It is further observed that failures of many of Africa’s integration schemes are due to some deficiencies in their constitutions including lack of serious commitment to their respective programmes. Although it is not our view that the European Economic Community should serve as a model for Africa's economic schemes, there are a lot of useful experiences to be drawn from it, in view of its successes.
