Factors that contribute to employee turnover in tourism sector: a case of national college of tourism
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Sebastian, Farida
This study explored the factors that contribute to employee turnover in the tourism sector with National College of Tourism as its case study. A sample of 50 respondents was interviewed and filled structured questionnaires from various departments of National College of Tourism in Dar es Salaam. This research applied exploratory research design. The collected data were analyzed using content qualitative analysis since it was an exploratory study. The data was coded, summarized and presented in tabular format by the use of SPSS. Results revealed that unfair treatment, poor methods of conflict management, poor orientation of organizational culture, poor compensation package and poor management support in training and career development were identified to be the front factors influencing turnover. It was also found that ineffective management retention strategies, unclear procedures for promotion as well as management practices play a role in labour turnover. It is recommended that the National College of Tourism should have clear policies to govern the promotion and development of employees, motivate employees to work through giving bonuses, recognizing the workers with remarkable performance as well as reviewing salaries especially for supporting staff so as to match their income with prevailing economic condition which in turn will help to retain the workers.
