    Evaluation of operation and maintenance needs of constructed wetlands for wastewater management in Tanzania

    Operation and Maintenance of Constructed Wetlands (CWs) was not properly addressed during the initial development stage of the CW technology in Tanzania. As such the technology has been developed without operation and maintenance guidelines to owners of these systems. This has resulted into under performance of some of constructed wetlands systems in Tanzania. This study was intended to evaluate the operation and maintenance needs focusing on maintenance of plants, structures, and systems operation and maintenance. Data were collected by administering structured questionnaires to users of the systems. Collected samples were analyzed using SPSS version17 and Water quality was analyzed in accordance with the standard Methods for Examination of Water and Wastewater (APHA, 1995). The findings of the study show higher removal performance of pollutants in well operated and maintained systems than the systems with no proper operation and maintenance. Well operated and maintained systems required reliable source of fund to provide incentives to the operators, as well as the cost for water quality monitoring. The wetland design, operation and maintenance procedures were found to be important components for healthy functioning systems. The effective operation and maintenance of the systems requires immediate preparation of operation and maintenance manual that contain all operation and maintenance procedures and guidelines for the systems.
