(University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) Salim, Salim Kessi
This work has been built upon the implementation of community policing as a crime reduction mechanism. The objective has been to evaluate the effectiveness of community policing in the prevention of crimes in Tanzania. The work essentially evaluates community policing as crime prevention mechanism recently adopted in the country. In Tanzania, the research for appropriate policing mechanisms to protect the community from crimes has been a major concern of the government. There have been a lot of concern over the efficiency of police in combating crimes in the country. It is this irrefutable fact which prompted the Tanzania police force to adopt and implement community policing as a mechanism for fighting crimes. The study address itself to the effectiveness of community policing in reducing crimes. It is based on the assumption that community policing has failed to reduce crimes in the country. It assess the police efforts in mobilizing the community to participate in fighting crimes, with reference to strategies designed to implement the mechanism. It has been reported in this work that police effort officers as well as the community have not been sufficiently mobilized to participate in community policing. Moreover, the work points out the challenges pertaining to the implementation of community policing.
