Item Orphans and vulnerable children access to primary education: The Case of the Impact of Various Types of Support on School Attendance and Academic Performance in Temeke District(University of Dar es Salaam, 2006) Salia, Paul JohnThis study examined the impact of various types of support on school attendance and academic performance among orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Temeke District. Particularly, three primary schools namely Keko Magurumbasi, Mtoni and Wailes were visited. The sample constituted respondents at both district/ward and school levels whereby the latter included head teachers, five other teachers and a total of 120 OVC pupils. Data were collected through interviews, observations and the documentary reviews. The study found that the OVC in Temeke District received a variety of supportive items such as pairs of uniforms, exercise books, pens, pencils, pairs of shoes, school bags, food, health services and emotional support even though the said kinds of support were piecemeal and available only for the lucky few. Accordingly, it was revealed that a good number of OVC pupils were involved in performing adults’ roles before and after school hours besides walking long distances while going to school thus making them always miss the morning lesson or classes. Further, the study revealed that while the various types of support received by the OVC pupils impacted positively on their school attendance, such support had not impact on academic performance. Nevertheless, there was statistically moderate to good relationship between OVC’s school attendance and academic performance.
