    The pattern and sequence of events in the evolution of students’ strikes in two secondary schools in coast region in Tanzania

    This study examined the pattern and causes of students’ strikes in selected secondary schools in Coast Region in Tanzania. Specifically, the study focused on examining the pattern of events, precipitating factors that trigger students’ strikes and management styles associated to precipitation or resolution of students’ strikes. Related literature showed that, very little attempt has been made concerning students crisis in secondary school. Thus make this study being conducted. The study used qualitative case study approach to analyze the causes and pattern of conflicts in two selected secondary schools in coast region. In-depth analysis was subjected to both two cases studied by using a five model conflict analysis. Documentary analysis, interviews and focus group discussions with key informants were the sources of information. The pattern of conflicts identified included between students and school administration, within students themselves, and between students and teachers. The causes included scarcity of resources, administrative incompetence, favoritism, absenteeism from school and classrooms, growth and expansion on enrolment that causes congestions in dormitories and classrooms, misunderstandings between senior and junior students, absence of guidance and counseling services, and communication breakdown. The study established that, lack of early warning systems and management styles in which secondary schools were operated triggered and precipitated the strikes. The study recommended that, in order to effectively and efficiently manage students’ strikes in secondary schools, the following measures should be taken, including improving communication, allowing dialogue, empowering schools with resources, school rules and regulations should be communicated regularly, there should be a tendency of assessing the performance and accountability of headmasters regularly and their appointment should consider their quality, and counseling services should be implemented at schools.
