The environmental and economic impact of solid waste dumping on adjacent residents in kigogo
(University of Dar es salaam, 2009) Rwelengera, Benezet
The purpose of the study was to assess the drivers and motivations for the locating the dump at Kigogo and to examine the resulting impacts to the adjacent residents and scavengers. The study was carried out in Kigogo Kati, one of the three streets in Kigogo ward. A total of 100 households and 30 scavengers were involved in providing information concerning the study. Data collection was based on case study. The primary data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences and the data were presented in form of description, tables, text boxes and figures. Findings revealed that the main reason for locating the dump at Kigogo was its convenient location with respect tom being in the city and thus less transport charges. It was also revealed also that in spite of the many adverse health and environmental impacts, the dump has been of great help to the Kigogo residents by filling the gullies and supporting the embankments. There were also a number of benefits to the scavengers and recyclers. The study concludes that with better planning and environmental governance then the disposal of waste will take into consideration the associated impacts to the environment and adjacent residents. Similarly with that in line then the true potential of the waste recovery and waste trade chain can be realised. It is finally recommended that the current waste management guidelines and approaches need to be reviewed to enhance the benefits accrued from the management of dumps.
