    Effects of organizational culture on health and safety in construction sites in Tanzania

    Construction organization have many side effects on workers, practitioners and end users’ health Nonetheless, the research-based information on the effects of organizational culture on the health and safety management in Tanzania construction sites has remained relatively limited. This study was therefore conducted to find out the practices of health and safety culture effect assessment, communication and organization culture control in the Tanzanian context. Some construction sites in Dar es Salaam sites in Dar es Salaam were selected though convenience sampling. The study deployed interviews, questionnaires and participant observation as methods of data collection. Findings form the study show that organization culture management is a responsibility of the contractor. Yet, it is carried out only during the construction phase. It was also revealed that no systematic method is used for organizational culture assessment, apart from personal experience, educational background and the existing regulations. The study also disclosed that information on the organization culture is communicated through toolbox meetings, informal discussions, and is controlled by using personal protective equipment (PPE). Furthermore, the study findings revealed that regulatory, organizational and individual systems together with the work environment have both positive and negative effects on the earth and safety in the management of organization culture. The data confirmed that the site location, configuration, procurement system and complexity of design are the main challenges hampering health and safety in the construction sites.
