(University of Dar es Salaam, 1979) Rubanza, Yunus I
This study attempts to find out the role of Kihaya as a case study of the role played by local languages in Tanzania. Chapter one discusses in detail the historical role of Kihaya and Kiswahili. It shows how Kihaya used to be a dominant language in a tribal setting and its changing position after the encroachment of Kiswahili into the areas it used to dominate. Chapter Two deals with the research findings, it looks at the present status of Kihaya and its relationship to Kiswahili. It discusses such issues as who speaks what to whom and when. Chapter Three deals with the general implications of this study for research into local languages and their role in the modern society. The conclusions in Chapter Four summaries the discussion of the foregoing chapters. It compares the conclusion of the study of other sociolinguistic researches conducted in other countries. In this chapter too, some possible areas for further research are pointed out.
