Item Factors hindering the effectiveness of the management of the performance appraisal function at Kenyatta national hospital.(University of Dar es Salaam, 2001) Rotich, Andrew KimaruThe study reported here analyzed the factors that hinder the effectiveness of performance appraisal function. The case study of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). Under the above broad objective the study explored the opinions of all employees towards performances appraisal Programme, performance appraisal interview, feedback and their views on the general feeling on the existing PA Programme. It also sought to find out what factors hinders the effectiveness of the existing performance appraisal as regards to its adequate depthness in coverage to the existing heterogeneous job family. The need for the study arose out of the urge to develop a better understanding of the link between an effective PA and organizational performance. This was as a result of the current trends in the market place where organizations are right- sizing with a view to increasing the productivity of the fewer employees in surpassing the total productivity of employees before right sizing. This study was exploratory in nature as not much research had been conducted in the area and little is known in the subject. A sample survey of KNH employees was carried out, data was collected using a structured self - reporting questionnaire, analyzed and presented in tables and percentages. In conclusion, the finding of the study revealed that the KNH performance appraisal function was defective right from its design, preparation, coordination and implementation. Lack of management support, training of appraisers, poorly designed instrument, feedback mechanism are also some of the factors identified as inhibiting the effectiveness of the performance appraisal function.
