Statistical analysis of ambient conditions and water temperature in volume calibration of small laboratory glassware
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Revocatus, Lazaro
Volumetric apparatus calibration is a very sensitive matter in metrological institutes and or department. Identification and evaluation of the uncertainty factors affecting volume calibration of volumetric apparatus such as small laboratory glassware is a critical issue to investigate in order to increase accuracy in calibration. The purpose of this study is to establish the regression between volume calibration of small laboratory glassware and ambient factors such as ambient conditions and water temperature. The study used existing empirical data from Tanzania Bureau of Standard. In order to establish better relationship, the study used fifteen predictor variables namely ambient temperature, pressure, relative humidity, water temperature and their respective interaction terms. The multiple linear regression model is used to analyse predictor variables. From the analysis, only eight out of fifteen predictor variables were tested significant at less than . The ambient pressure, relative humidity, water temperature, interaction between ambient temperature and relative humidity, and interaction between ambient temperature and water temperature were found to be most statistically significant uncertainty contributing factors at 95% confidence interval ( ). The multiple linear regression model developed has shown great predictive power of calibration volume of small laboratory glassware with an explanation degree of 99.9% at confidence interval of 95%. Water temperature, interactions between ambient temperature and relative humidity and that between ambient temperature and water temperature were found to be the most sensitive factors in the model.
