Item Mathematical model for optimizing cashewnuts production in Mtwara region(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Rashid, Sharif AliThis study is focused on analyzing the yield gaps in optimizing cashewnuts production by using mathematical model. This is facilitated by the concept of production factors where different sets of factors enhancing cashewnuts growth and development are distinguished. The approach recognizes two sets of factors, namely: Controllable and Uncontrollable factors. In this model cashewnuts production system is characterized by sufficient supply of water, pesticide application and nutrients (fertilizer). These factors limit cashewnuts growth and development when their supply is suboptimal during part or whole duration of the cropping season. The systems approach based on the use of cashewnuts simulation models allow the quantification of crop productivity and yield gaps in temps of different levels of water, fertilizer and pesticide, and attainable yield. This study briefly describes the contribution of mathematical models in the development of cashewnuts production and outlines the potential uses of this kind of model for sustainable agricultural development. The model is an empirical model that simulates cashewnuts production based on the interactions of the various underlying productionfactors. The solutions have been done by using statistical method whereby the analysis of variance (ANOVA) table, plots and partial correlation were used in model analysis.Final results illustrate that irrigation and pesticide are the sets of factors enhancing cashewnuts production. The model is very useful to researchers, extension workers and policy makers.
