The trends of Artisanal fishery development in Kilwa Coastal area, Lindi, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) Ramadhan, Idd Kassim
This study used time series (I990 to 2012) fisheries data i.e. total catch and standardized effort to analyze the catch trends visa vis the fisheries management regime in Kilwa district. Artisanal marine fisheries of Kilwa is mainly artisanal and subsistence supporting the livelihoods of man y families. The study revealed that there was about a 290% increase in fishing effort from 3,939 in 1990 to 11,483 fishing gear in 2012, due to high demand of fishery products, also, the increase in fish collection center and the accessibility of roads to near region. Due to open access regime, which attract more people to join the fishery and the absence of an alternative employment opportunity of coastal communities, total standardized effort and the corresponding CPUE showed an increase of fishing effort while CPUE fluctuated between 1993 to 1996 and 200-l to 2006. But CPUE was at highest level of I 9.69 in 2007 which give the impression that the fishing was still health.
