Exploring the Tanzanian business organizations entry into international business: the case of IPP Group of Companies
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) Peter, Comfort
This study explored the Tanzanian business organizations entry into international business. For major factors emerged from the data to explain the internationalization. The four factors include owner manager’s international orientation, globalization of the firm’s industry structure, established international networks, and foreign market potential. Successful firms were found to have owner managers with an international orientation and established international networks. The study was descriptive in nature and involved both quantitative and qualitative data which were collected by a survey approach. The sample size was taken to be 90 employees equivalent to 45% of the total workforce of the IPP group of companies whereby 19% was taken from the senior management officials. The study employed three sampling techniques namely stratified, simple random and purposive sampling techniques to select the individuals to be included in the study. The data included information during the involvement and before involvement; problems encountered after involvement, future intentions of management, and the cost and were collected through questionnaires. This study was limited by its relatively small sample size of one firm only. Future studies can replicate this study by using larger samples of firms and respondents. For policy makers this study has identified the role of a conductive domestic environment and an international orientation as important drivers of Tanzania firms international success. Exposing Tanzanian business firms to more international market opportunities can stimulate export growth. For firms’ managers this study suggests a more proactive approach to internationalization that guarantees successful international operations through establishing international networks.
