    Domestic rainwater harvesting in gulu municipality, Uganda: status and prospects

    Gulu district has been having insurgencies by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) for the last 20 years. This has led to a rapid increase in the population commuting from the rural areas to town in search of security thus posing a great challenge on provision of sufficient water quantity and quality by existing water supply systems. This study identifies Rainwater Harvesting as one of the alternative sources of water that is required to meet local water needs for Gulu Municipality (GM). It evaluates the status of existing Domestic Rainwater Harvesting (DRWH) techniques and prospects for improved RWH technologies. Results were based on data collected from a survey of 120 households through questionnaire interviews, three different key informants in the water sector and secondary data from relevant literature. The total water available was calculated to be 1.52 xl06m3/year. And the current demand was 2.2 x 106m3/year. This shows that the existing water sources do not meet the demand of the population in GM. Therefore, the status of existing RWH techniques was examined. This revealed that roof catchment is the main technique and are appropriate only as a complementary source but there is insufficient storage facilities. By establishing RWH techniques through rooftop catchment, it was revealed that the yield of rainfall was 1.16 x 106m3/year. And storage capacity was calculated to be 10m3. From this result it can be noted that RWH is suitable and can solve water shortage in GM. But there is lack of funds for construction of storage facilities. The institutional status of water supply is still faced with a number of challenges both technical and financial. This can be solved by accommodating the different sector players with a clearer roles and responsibilities.
