    Development of a model for quantification of mobile phone wastes in Tanzania

    Lack of model for quantification of mobile phone waste makes it difficult to determine data on the quantities of mobile phone waste produced in the country and to propose a suitable management system of the same. The methodology used in this research for model development has considered the material flow analysis of the mobile phone market in Tanzania in order to represent the Tanzanian mobile phone market through processes, flows and stocks; Simplification of the model to be able to model it with available data and Development of different model scenarios. Various regression models were developed from graphical presentation of subscription data obtained from TCRA, exponential regression model was selected to be the best due to its highest correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.977, hence the equation can be used to predict number of subscription at any year of waste quantification. Subscription data/mobile phone customers, transfer coefficient and average weight of a mobile phone are the main inputs to the derived model for quantification of mobile phone wastes (Wmp). The model was further tested using data from two scenarios generated, model-testing results reveal that both scenarios gives equal answers with summarised model equation Weight (Tonnes/year) = 2.51442 x 10^-5 Sf(x). The model was also validated to see how far the predicted results reflect the reality. The model developed was specifically for quantification of mobile phone waste as the inputs depends on data of MP market in Tanzania, the researcher is therefore recommend that further studies should be done on the quantification of e-waste from other type of e-waste.
