Employee commitment in public hospitals: a case of Muhimbili national hospital
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Nzowa, Seule .M. M.
The main purpose of this study was to examine employee commitment in public hospitals in the Tanzanian context. Specifically, the study was aimed at investigating the essence of employee commitment in public hospitals, to find out the factors influencing the employee commitment in public hospitals and to assess the factors that demoralise employees in public hospitals. Investigation was done at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) as a case study. The study used questionnaire, interview and documentary review as the tools for data collection. However the study used a sample size of 60 employees, 50 of them were given questionnaires and 10 were interviewed. The findings reveal that employees are not committed at MN H and their intention to leave the organization is high. Moreover it has been discovered that low wages and salary, poor working condition, poor promotion procedures and growth, poor relationship with supervisor/management, lack of and poor management recognition of employee’s job performance and poor communication between employees and senior management are the factors that demoralise employees in public hospitals. Therefore this study has recommended that creating an environment of trust by the government to its employees, better salary, freedom at work, fair treatment of all employees, good working environment, better allowances, recognition of work done, availability of working facilities/equipment, good management system and opportunity to training and development are the factors that are to be taken into consideration so as to bring employee’s commitment in public hospitals.
