Assessment on the role of accident prevention initiatives on efficient performance at Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA)
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Nyoni, Augustine Peter
The Dar es Salaam port encountered accident often and therefore, affected the port performance. To resolve the problem, management decided to introduce accident prevention programmes that aimed at reducing or alleviate accident events. For instance, in five years (2007-2011), 17 (0.6%) died, 498 (18.4%) were injured, while equipment accidents had the highest percent damage at 45. To justify the fitness of the adopted approach, the study assessed contribution of accident prevention on port performance covering a period of five years’ trend from 2011 to 2015. The study specifically looked on the influence of different accident prevention initiatives on port performance. Qualitative and quantitative data was generated using content analysis and frequency table. The study was conducted at the Dar es Salaam port using 150 respondents. The findings indicated that the accident prevention initiatives selected on this study (personal preventive equipment, training and proper design and maintenance) have weak contribution towards port performance. The variables selected contributed only to 21.8% towards port performance. It recommended that the management should focus on other factors to bring the performance at the port such as the use of technology (sophisticated machines) and motivation or rewards to the employees.
