    Ngara district: economic and social change, 1920s to 1980s

    This study has been done not because there have been no other prints produced by other people about Ngara District, but because few studies undertaken lack an approach that would have portrayed the historical causation of events they present. The existing general works either focused on administrative performance, and gender issues. Others had specific aim such as land Tenure in Bugufi and the life of refugees in Bushubi. The detailed work during the colonial period focused on Bugufi and ignored Bushubi. This dissertation attempts to ridge this gap through an approach that has aimed at a history of the whole district of least, with an attention to the period after the establishment of District rule in the district. But because history cannot start from a vacuum an outline of the features of the socio-economic relations in Ngoro district at the time of establishment of British rule is presented particular attention on pre colonial relations has been drawn mostly from the existing anthropological studies about the geographical area where the district is located within the Great lakes region of East Africa formerly known historically and anthropologically as interlocutrice zone. The aim has been to educate and guide interested readers of the economic and social; history of Ngara district. From written records and district interview with knowledgeable and experienced people, I was able to obtain data that have yielded new knowledge about how Ngara has become how is it. The colonial period and after saw the creation of new demands upon the people of Ngara and their gradual adaptation that marked the changes indicated in this work. However, I cannot claim that this is a definitive and only history of Ngara district because there is need to expand the knowledge about the history of the district with more detailed study. I hope it will expand the knowledge produced by this dissertation.
