Statistical analysis on poverty alleviation through saccos in Tanzania: a case of Temeke District
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Nyakale, Regina
Results show that respondents’ level of education is the main factor that enables people to access SACCOs loans. As regards use of funds people receive from SACCOs, focus was put on the profit generated from the business activities they engage in. The results indicate that the duration (in terms of years) of a respondent being in business, the type of business done by the respondent and the amount of loan received spent on business by respondents, respectively, have significant effects on the profits respondents get from their businesses. Business growth was found to be the leading factor that makes SACCOs loan recipients to decide whether or not to employ people in their business. Other factors were found to be age and sex. Generally, the results of this study indicate that SACCOs loans have a very high potential of being one effective way of alleviating poverty of their customers. Accordingly, it is recommended that urgent efforts should be made to facilitate group loans that will enable people of various levels of education to secure SACCOs loans. Furthermore, it is recommended that there should be timely provision of loans, ensure proper allocation of SACCOs branch offices that are adequately staffed and provide banking skills to customers and officials
