    Determinants of job satisfaction among administrative staff in higher learning institutions: the case of the Open University of Tanzania’s administrative staff

    The aim of this study was to examine the determinants of job satisfaction among administrative staff in Higher Learning Institutions in Tanzania, the case being the administrative staff of the Open University of Tanzania. The study was conducted at the Open University of Tanzania headquarter Dar es Salaam. Total of 152 administrative staff was sampled out of a population of 250 OUT administrative staff. This study used a quantitative research design. Simple random sampling method was used to select respondents from the population. Questionnaire and documentary review were used to collect data. Data was processed through SPSS and analysed by SPSS factor analysis method. In explaining some other findings descriptive statistics was employed. The study used Herzberg Two-Factor Theory and Vroom’s Expectancy Theory. The findings of the study revealed that employees at OUT prefer the organization to have good policies on compensation, promotion, training and development, performance appraisal, health and safety, good office facilities and condition a well designed job and good communication with superiors. The findings of the study imply that there is a direct relationship between job satisfaction and organization policies, job design, superior-subordinate communication and office facilities. Therefore from the findings of the study, it is recommended that Higher Learning Institutions in Tanzania are advised to create effective policies, create effective job designs, and create a culture of having effective superior-subordinate communication and desirable office facilities.
