The impact of listing on stock exchange on tax compliance in Tanzania: the case of Dar es Salaam stock esdxchange
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Nkomola, Ibrahim
The main objective of the study was to assess the impact of listing on the stock exchange on the tax compliance in Tanzania. The study focused on companies listed in Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) so as to establish any significant change on tax compliance before and after listed of those companies.Secondary data were collected on annual reports from all seventeen corporations. Both nonparametric test (Mann-Whitney U test) and parametric test (t-test statistics) were employed. The findings revealed that there is a significant difference on the records keeping and the amount of tax payment of the companies before and after being listed with the stock exchange. Although there are other factors such as probability of being audited and rate of taxes and penalties that may influence high level of tax compliance, the study suggests that if more companies will be listed and standards issue by capital market will be monitored then compliance will increase. From the findings of the study, it is recommended that the listing requirements should accommodate not only large companies, but also medium and small companies in order to enhance the level of compliance.
