    The generation and dissemination of information for hiv/aids prevention in rural Tanzania: an assessment through a gendered grassroots AIDS model

    This study sought to assess Tanzania's efforts in generating HlV/AIDS preventive information, and to investigate the possible causes of the failure to comrol the spread of the disease, in spite of all the information provided. Non- probabilistic purposive sampling was used to identify 292 villagers in six villages in three districts in rural Tanzania. Thirty officials and leaders also participated in the study. Data was collected through documentary reviews, questionnaires, in-depth interviews, discussions with key informants, focus group discussions and non-participant observation. The study revealed that: current information generation and dissemination methods are didactic and non-participatory, marginalising the targeted population. Women have limited access to sources of information and women groups are underutilized as fora for empowerment. Interpersonal communication on HIV/AIDS is still limited. The study concludes that: women groups can facilitate women's involvement in the information process, the quality of infomation agents and their relationships with the targeted people can impact the effectiveness of the message, and interpersonal communication at family level aids the success of information generation and dissemination efforts. The major study recommendations are: women themselves to recognise opportunities for change and strategize around them, thus working towards the eradication of the conflict between gender, cultural and patriarchal expectations and practices; to exploit the potential of action for income-generation and for gender-balanced empowerment; and to revivel or develop community information resource centres for collective involvement.
