    A study of working women/dual-role performers: the case of Tanzania Electric Supply Company Ltd

    The purpose of this study was to look at the effect of dual-role performance specifically on working mothers' work and home situations The survey was carried out at the Head Office of Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Dar es Salaam). Three hypotheses formed the basis of this study namely ;- ( I ) How and to what extent does dual-role performance affect women' opportunities for employment, training, promotion and ability to work over time? {2) How and to what extent does dual- role performance increase the husband/partner's share in domestic labour? and finally {3) How and to what extent does dual- role performance affect the wife/husband relationship? Data for this study was obtained through (1) the general. survey of literature (published and unpublished data) and company documents and minutes; (2) participant observation and (3) interviewing. As regard the first hypothesis, data obtained validated it. In additions other important elements have also been found to have an effect on the women's' work situation (i.e. partners' transfers sexual harassment etc..). The second hypothesis has in fact not been proven as traditional values held by men concerning sex-roles have not been successfully challenged or redefined. Finally data for the third hypothesis only reflected the stress created by the wife's absence from the home. There was no respondent who indicated that she was either pressurised to stop work by her husband/ partner or that her relationship to her partner was on the verge of breaking , as a result t of the tensions created by her absence from the home.
