Item Gender dynamics in the management and conservation of the environment in Moshi Rural District.(University of Dar es Salaam, 2002) Njau, AdelaThe study examined the relationship between gender dynamics at household level and environmental management and conservation in Moshi Rural District. The study utilized gender analysis framework approach with a view of addressing gender needs, opportunities, obstacles and constraints at household level that impact upon environmental management and conservation. Through a variety of research methods including face to face interviews and observations as well as group discussions, the study established that patriarchy is still strong in the research area. Patriarchal authority at the household level was found to determine division of labour, access to and control of resources, and decisionmaking. Previous projects on environmental management and conservation in the study area were found to have ignored this important factor in their inception, planning and implementation. It is recommended that new or improved strategies and interventions that address gender dynamics at household level should be instituted. This recommended approach, should include gender awareness campaigns at all levels of the society.
