(University of Dar es Slaam, 2013) Njau, Jesca
This study intended to assess the salient attributes influencing the buying behaviour toward imported products, with specific emphasis in furniture consumers in Dar es Salaam. Respondents from Dar es Salaam city were taken as a case study using a sample of 70 respondents. The study intended to examine the factors that make majority of Tanzanians to prefer imported furniture over locally produced furniture; to analyse the prices of imported furniture and locally produced furniture; to compare quality of imported furniture over locally produced furniture and lastly to examine the availability furniture in various sales points. The study mainly used questionnaires to collect primary data. SPSS was used for all types of statistical data analysis. The main findings of the study suggest that furniture users preferred imported furniture as compared to the locally produced furniture due to reasons such as high quality, availability, low price and attractiveness. 11% of the respondents said to use both types of furniture. It was further found that dealers of imported furniture provided credit facilities unlike dealers of locally produced furniture. This study recommends that local manufacturers should strive to produce attractive and high quality furniture which can compete with imported furniture in the market. Tanzanians are also urged by this study to change their mind-set and attitudes toward imported products and use the made in Tanzania furniture.
