Socio-economic determinants of household education expenditure in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Ngwilizi, David Nehemiah
There is no doubt all over the world today that education as investment of human capital is key input for economic growth, political and cultural growth of any nations. Such input produce a spillover benefits that lead to higher sustained rates of economic growth. This study uses a sample from the 2010/11 National Panel Data to investigate socioeconomic determinants of household education expenditure in Tanzania. A model used underlies a typical earnings function on which household education expenditure was regress to its determinants. The obtained results revealed that a size of household, income of household, education of household head, school-age-children and number of children were major determinants of household to invest on human capital. However in urban household the age of the household head plays a significant role, where as the household head to be male or female found to be a trivial factor. On the rural household, although age of household head is significant determinant of household education spending, the research findings show that the contribution is minimal even on young household head. These findings imply that a household education spending plays a strategic role on human capital investment. Moreover, the study suggests for collective effort among the social domain towards education resources allocation and merely on rural areas
