Study of solid waste management in the City of Dar es Salaam
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1992) Ngiloi, Anderson O
As in other cities of developing nations solid waste management in Dar es salaam is not yet well established. Hardly more than 25% of the generated waste is collected. The generation rates and composition of the solid waste vary from place to place. Some solid wastes are hazardous and require special disposal consideration. However, most of the waste in Dar es Salaam is of organic matter in nature. There are various methods of solid waste disposal. The existing solid waste disposal practices are discussed. Due to the limited financial resources both local and foreign, open dumping is the final method of disposing collected city wastes. Use of nonstandardized containers at points of generation and collection hamper analysis and efficiency of the practice. Both side loading, compacting and non compacting trucks or tractors collect and transport the wastes to the disposal site. The risk of environmental pollution associated with the current solid waste mismanagement is high and signs of polluted water sources have been noted. With an understanding of budgetary constraints data on the practiced solid waste management in terms of refuse generation, storage, collection and final disposal have been analyzed and the problem pertaining to every functional elements have been observed and their solutions provided.
