Providing education to orphans for poverty eradication: the case of life-skills training in Temeke district
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Ngamesha, Ignatius Polieet
The study investigated the provision of life skills training to orphans in Temeke District. Three orphanage centers namely Kurasini National Children Home, Saudia and Don Bosco Vocational Centre were visited. The sample comprised one respondent from Department of Social Welfare in Temeke District, three heads of orphanage centers and a total of 45 orphans. Data were collected through interviews, observations and documentary reviews. The study found that orphans in Temeke District did attend various life skills training such as tailoring, carpentry, masonry, driving, welding and fine and performing art. Despite the fact that, orphans in the selected orphanage centers had attended various life skills training, the study revealed that these programs were not so much effective to orphans. A quite number of orphans claimed that it became difficult to get decent jobs or create self- employment because orphanage centers lacked capacities in terms of equipment, training personnel and sometimes funds were allocated to other activities
