    Stakeholders’ views on the functions, operations and performance of the national examinations council of Tanzania

    This study investigate stakeholders’ views on the functions, operations and performance of the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA). The objectives of the study were: to explore stakeholders’ views on the functions and functionality of NECTA, to establish stakeholders views on the performance of NECTA in terms of operations. The study employed qualitative approach and involved a case study design. A total of 74participants were involved of which 25 were secondary teachers, 27 were secondary school students, 11 were parents/guardians and 11 were NECTA officials. The participants were sampled conveniently and purposively. Data were collected through interview and Focus group discussion and were analyzed through content analysis. The findings showed that in stakeholders’ views, to a large extent, NECTA was performing well and had some prospects which would improve its operations which are: to be fairer in marking examinations, be fast in issuing certificates and buy some machinery and modern equipment. In accordance with the findings, the study recommends that cameras should be installed in the examinations rooms/halls so that cheating in examinations can easily be traced, e-assessment should be introduced to curb the leakage so as to make it function in a better way.
